Robbers invade Lagos airport, kill two policemen

Robbers invade Lagos airport, kill two policemen

Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed
Heavily armed robbers on Wednesday night invaded the International Wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos, killed two policemen and made away with a huge amount of foreign currencies from some bureau-de-change operators at nation’s premier gateway, officials said.
The dare devil robbers, who arrived the airport some few minutes to nine, headed for the BDC operators centre near the car park and started shooting sporadically, eyewitnesses said.
The robbers, numbering over 10, were said to have been engaged in a gun duel for about 30 minutes by policemen attached to the airport.
The gunfight, it was learnt, resulted in the death of two policemen and one armed robber, who was said to have tied local magical bands all over his arms and body.
As at a few minutes past 9pm, the two dead policemen were being conveyed in a van to the mortuary, according to eyewitnesses.
The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mr. Bayo Ajileye, could not be reached for comments. His telephone line was switched off when our correspondent made a call.
However, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, Mr. Yakubu Dati, confirmed the robbery.
He, however, said he could only confirm the death of one of the robbers. He said the level of casualties was being ascertained.
He added, “The situation has since been brought under control by the swift intervention of joint security force. They were apparently attempting to rob a bureau de change operator near the airport. Normal operations and flight have not been affected by the incident.”
The event has exposed the porous security network of the nation’s flagship airport.
Last year, robbers came to the airport and made away with millions of dollars from BDC operators.
An eyewitness said the robbers came into the airport through the car park.

We hid stolen cars in church – Suspects

We hid stolen cars in church – Suspects

The suspects
Three robbery suspects, who for months, after snatching cars from female drivers, hid them in a catholic church, have been arrested by the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Ikeja, Lagos State.
Chinedu Ndubisi, 23, Haruna Mohammed, 44 and Slyvanus Happyday, 35, were before their arrest, members of a five-man gang, who terrorised Epe, Ajah, Lekki Peninsula and Victoria Island areas.
The gang leader, ADEY , told PUNCH Metro how they were able to use church premises for their nefarious activities.
He said, “We have an operational car, a Toyota Corolla. Although we all drive, Haruna drives us during operations because he is very good.
“Whenever we see a choice automobile being driven by a woman, I instruct Haruna quickly hit her from behind. Often any female driver will leave her car key at the ignition whenever you hit her car. That is what we take advantage of.
“The moment the woman steps out to check the extent of damage to her car, John and Festus, who are still at large, would quickly get into the woman’s car and drive off.”
Ndubuisi told PUNCH Metro that they had no need to operate with guns.
He said, “Once a woman’s car is hit, she will walk towards the car of the person who hit her. Immediately John and Festus will drive off the victim’s car, we follow suit. Everything is done quickly so that the victim is taken by surprise.
“We drive to a Catholic church at Sangotedo where we park the stolen car without the knowledge of the parish priest. I am a Catholic and I know the church members are allowed to park their cars there for at least three days. That is enough time for us to get a buyer and dispose of the car without attracting attention.”
A contract technician, Happyday, told PUNCH Metro that he was a buyer of the stolen vehicles. He said, “I know the cars given to me for sale are stolen but I didn’t mind. I am a technician by profession and often get contracts with oil companies. My last contract ended last year. Since then, I have been idle. That is how I got myself into trouble.”
Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos Command,  Ngozi Briade, a DSP, confirmed the incident.
She said, “The suspects were arrested when they tried to sell a Toyota Corolla LE with number plate AG 816 SGD stolen from a woman at Chevron New Road, Ajah.
“Ndubuisi had given the car to a soldier to sell at Abuja. The car was traced to the soldier who after his arrest led the SARS team to Ndubuisi. Ndubisi was tricked into believing that the car had been sold and that the money was at a bank in Mayfair, Ajah. He was tracked down to the bank through his victim’s blackberry which was still in his possession.
“Women drivers should be security-conscious; they should make good use of their side mirrors to know whether the driver that hit them from behind is alone or with other men in his car. This will enable her to know whether to stop or keep moving. Distress numbers have been provided by the Commissioner of Police, the public should make use of them.”

Michelle Obama, First Lady United States graces the cover of Vogue Magazine

First Lady Michelle Obama has appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine for the second time, talking about family values and pushing back at critics who say she and the president need to socialize more.
Mrs Obama, 49, was captured in the April 2013 issue of the magazine - which hits newsstands on March 26 - by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.
She first appeared on the cover of Vogue in March 2009 - right after her husband was inaugurated for his first term.

In an open, and assertive stance, she leans against a table and looks directly into the camera’s lens with her bare arms resting at her side.
Wearing a Reed Krakoff dress, taken from her own closet, in cerulean blue with a flourish of purple at the neckline, Mrs Obama looks comfortable, at ease, and happy.
By contrast, for Mrs Obama’s debut appearance on the Vogue cover in March 2009, she sat curled on a sofa with her arms lightly wrapped one over the other in a protective gesture; and the discomfort in her facial expression is palpable.
In the accompanying interview, by Jonathan Van Meter, the First Lady summarizes her relationship to fashion. Her style is mentioned only once in the profile, and in just one paragraph - insinuating perhaps that she has more important things on her mind.

Security Officer Killed In IMT Students’ Election

A security officer attached to the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, Mr. Festus Eze, has died after being hit on the head during a student election of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology in the institute.

The PUNCH learnt from IMT’s management that the late Eze was among those deployed to forestall violence during the election on Tuesday.
Activities in most departments were paralysed when our correspondent visited the school on Wednesday.
A student (name withheld) of the affected department disclosed that trouble started when some students who felt the election was not going in their favour came in to disrupt it.

“The late security officer tried to stop them from disrupting the election; in the ensuing crisis, one of the students reached for a concrete pole and hit the officer on the head.

“He fainted immediately and people started running. Some tried to revive him by pouring water on him, but he was later rushed to a hospital,” the student said.

The Enugu State Police Command said it has commenced investigation into incident.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said that Eze wasn’t only hit on the head but was beaten up by yet-to-be identified group of students during the departmental election.

“He was rushed to Memfims Hospital in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu but confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary in Ntasiobi Specialist Hospital, also in Enugu, for autopsy,” the PPRO said.

Sachet 'Pure' Water Causes Cancer When Exposed To Heat

Prof. Amobi Ilika has advised those who consume sachet water (popularly called pure water) exposed to heat to be wary in order to avoid drinking cancerous substances.
Ilika, who is the Director of Community and Public Medicine at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, said sachet water exposed to heat beyond room temperature could be cancerous.
He said the heat could melt some of the substances used in making the polythene bags.
According to him, the polythene bags contain cancerous materials that are harmful to the body.
“The most important is the deterioration of the water while in polythene bags made of synthetic petroleum; since the polythene bags are weather-sensitive. Some of the properties of the polythene bags made of synthetic petroleum product materials melt into the water after sun-ray or heat exposure. Thus, carcinogenic materials will drop into the water.
The polythene bags also develop germs and micro organisms which enter the water through the deterioration of the polythene bag,’’ he said.

KETU FIRE: Lagos State Govt Promises To Help Reconstruct Market

11 March, 2013
Local
Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has assured traders at the Ifelodun plank market, Ketu, of his administration’s readiness to support them financially in rebuilding the market which was razed by fire last Thursday.
photo
Fashola, who spoke during an inspection of the market on Sunday, said the incident was unfortunate, adding that his administration was poised to assuage the losses incurred by the traders.
Fashola said it was unfortunate that the traders did not have insurance because it was very important especially in the event of fire or other disasters.
He said, “You traders are part of your problems. You ought to have insurance. All your equipment that got burnt, including the woods, should be handled by insurance companies.
“What we must do if you want me to help is that we must make it compulsory for everybody to have insurance because there is no way people as many as this can work in a place and there won’t be eventualities.
“So, insurance is for situations like this and I use this opportunity to tell traders not affected by the fire to also get insurance because it is not very expensive. That is how it is done worldwide and ours must not be different.”
While responding to questions from journalists, Fashola said it was ridiculous that some people were spreading rumours that government had a hand in the inferno which caused the traders to lose goods and equipment worth millions of naira.

He said, “How can people say such a thing. People can be incredible. In fact, I will not dignify it with an answer.”
The governor also insisted that insurance was good for the traders, adding that if Nigerians could embrace the culture of insurance, it would improve the economy.
He said, “We appeal to all markets and companies that we should insure our businesses, warehouses and inventory of goods. That is what insurance is for. It is insurance companies that the traders should be talking to now and not the government.
“We will however intervene here and probably use this market as a model after it has been reconstructed and we will put them through insurance practice. We hope it is something that will gain foothold ultimately and it helps also to broaden the base of our economy and keep people in that business (insurance) at work.”
Earlier, the chairman of the market, Alhaji Aliyu Bello, had appealed to the governor to support the traders financially so that they could rebuild the market by themselves.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency had begun demolishing structures affected by the fire.
An emergency official at the scene said, “We should finish demolition and evacuation of the debris latest by Friday and then reconstruction will begin.”
